28 weeks. Oh Hello, Third Trimester!

How far along? 28 weeks, third trimester at last!

How big is baby? bigger than last week, that's for dang sure

Total weight gain/loss: -15.

Maternity clothes? Nope. I can still wear all of my longer shirts just fine, and all of my pants fit fine if I just wear them below my belly.

Sleep: Insomnia has crept in full force. I mean I toss, turn, and try to sleep until Jon's alarm goes off at 7am. Then I sleep for about 4 hours. Then I'm tired all day.

Best moment the last two weeks: Hmm. Being in the third trimester is a neat thought- the home stretch! We also started our hypnobabies classes and I'm excited for that, too.

Movement: All the time.

Food cravings: Haven't really been having any the last two weeks. Food is mostly unappealing, and since I have been limited to a microwave for cooking (which, btw, I generally never ever use) while the kitchen is torn apart, things have been kept pretty simple.

Food Aversions: Anything leafy, again.

Gender: Boy. <3

Pregnancy Symptoms: Does being antisocial count? I mean, I'm really not the most social person to begin with but I'm ready to just get rid of my phone altogether so I don't have to keep explaining that I just don't even keep it on me, because I have nothing to say and no one I want to talk to. I'm still battling nausea pretty much every single second of every day, too. I can feel my energy level declining again, but I really think that will improve when I have a kitchen and am preparing more nutritious food again. I'm really repulsed by the amount of fast food we've had to fall back on lately, and I can feel the difference in my body, it's repulsed too.

Belly Button in or out? In

What I miss: Nothing.

What I am looking forward to: December!

Upcoming appointments/events: Next appointment is October 7th.

Milestones: So far: made it through first trimester, had first (and second) ultrasound, and discovered gender, and felt movement, Jon has felt movement from outside, belly popped finally, anatomy scan (went well), being able to see movement, point of viability passed, started birthing classes, started third trimester

Bump Picture: maybe later.

26 weeks!

How far along? 26 weeks

How big is baby? According to Babycenter, he's an eggplant.

Total weight gain/loss: -12. (146)

Maternity clothes? Nope. I can still wear all of my longer shirts just fine, and all of my pants fit fine if I just wear them below my belly.

Sleep: I haven't been sleeping super well, mostly because I have SO much on my mind with all the things going on with our house/ property. I'm confident I can get this back on track after some of these projects are done. Chase gets SUPER busy at 4am every morning, like clockwork and if I'm not awake already, it wakes me up. Unfortunately I've been having night terrors and wake up in a complete panic on a regular basis. Again, probably moreso house stress than anything pregnancy related. :-/

Best moment the last two weeks: Hmm. Honestly? The last two weeks haven't been very good, and with no milestones to report, I'm stumped.

Movement: All the time.

Food cravings: Egg and cheese burritos, with lots of hot sauce.

Food Aversions: Haven't really had any as of late, which is good because I can eat leafy greens again, which I could not for several months.

Gender: Boy. <3

Pregnancy Symptoms: Mostly I just feel really emotionally whacko lately. I'm finding that I'm getting really overwhelmed really easily, which is something I struggle with anyway but moreso now. I'm crying over really stupid things and it's just frustrating. And then I cry because I'm frustrated. Though, I guess in all fairness there is A LOT going on right now, and I think most normal  people would even be a bit frenzied with all the things going terribly wrong.

What I miss: Nothing.

What I am looking forward to: Third trimester, which starts next week.

Upcoming appointments/events: Next appointment is September 19, if I remember correctly. I need to double check! We start our Hypnobabies class on the 20th, and we have a forum group coming up this Saturday. I can't believe after my next appointment they move to every other week.

Milestones: So far: made it through first trimester, had first (and second) ultrasound, and discovered gender, and felt movement, Jon has felt movement from outside, belly popped finally, anatomy scan (went well), being able to see movement, point of viability passed.

24 Weeks!

I think the last two weeks have gone by just a little bit faster than usual, which is a welcome change to the snail's pace that time has been creeping along at for the last couple months. We are getting so much done around the house but there is so much more to do, we for sure have our work cut out for us! This weekend I am going to Texas to see my sister and her family, and hopefully a little trip away will also help time go by faster. Not that I'm anxious for December to hurry up and get here or anything.

How far along? 24 weeks! (and 1 day)

How big is baby? Approx 12" long, and 1.3lb

Total weight gain/loss: -16. (142) Wooo hooo, I am up 2 lbs again. Hopefully I can hang onto it this time.

Maternity clothes? Still wearing normal clothes but jeans are getting more and more uncomfortable and do not button over my belly anymore. My shirts are fine though, I tend to buy long shirts due to the fact I have a long torso in the first place, so I think a lot of them will actually continue to work for a while. I haven't actually gained any inches anywhere but my belly, so everything fits elsewhere still.

Sleep: I've had insomnia a few nights this past week, and mornings have gotten more difficult to embrace again. I think it has a lot more to do with all the projects than it does pregnancy though. I find the more stressed I am the harder sleep is, and with as much as we have going on with house renovations I think it's safe to say sleep will be a struggle again for a while.

Best moment the last two weeks: I had an appointment with my midwife last Tuesday. It was probably the best pregnancy-related moment of the last two weeks because I left with such an overwhelming sense of security that I cried happy tears all the way home. Jon was unable to go to this appointment, so it was just she and I, and we talked about a lot of different things and thoughts that might be effecting me and my decisions on a deeper level than we had in appointments before. It was a good appointment, and I just know with no doubts we are on the track we need to be on.

Movement: Every day, and it makes me happy. Some of the movements are so strong they borderline on uncomfortable, but I will so take it!

Food cravings: Banana bread, which my mom made for me on Sunday and they were every bit as delicious as I knew they would be all week. Also, peaches always sound good, always. I don't know that it's a craving, but I'm sure enjoying them!

Food Aversions: Slowly getting over my leafy green aversion, which is a good thing!

Gender: Boy. <3

Pregnancy Symptoms: I'm going to be completely honest and uncensored here because I hate it when people pretend things are peachy and everything is fabulous when it's not. No matter HOW excited I am to be pregnant (and I am very, very excited btw) there are just certain things that come along with pregnancy that while completely worth it, are not in any way fun. I wanted to be "that person" that just loves every moment of it, but I'm not. Some things just can't be embraced and enjoyed. Not unless you're crazy, much crazier than I am.
My back hurts constantly, every single day. It's like my tailbone is being crushed and pulled towards my bellybutton.
I also have on again off again hemorrhoids (which I've NEVER had in my entire life. I didn't even know what the heck was going on at first, and called my mom, from the toilet, in tears, asking what in the world to do. What a miserable problem.) which occasionally make life a miserable burning Hell. Anyone who embraces crapping flames has a few screws loose.
No matter WHAT I eat, I'm nauseous after, even if I felt fine before eating, Not just a little nauseous, but curl-up-on-the-couch and be completely useless nauseous for about an hour. Cucumber and watermelon seem to be the ONLY exceptions.
Oh, and gas. Being up all night with gas pains last night was a joke. Missing sleep over farts is so unfair.
Other than all that, I really do feel pretty good! I'm not miserable all the time, and I absolutely *love* my belly. I'm able to be productive during the day and though by about 5pm I'm tired, it's after actually working all day and I think it is reasonable to be tired by then.

22 weeks!

Twenty-two weeks. Time is crawling along, slowly but surely. Normally I hate having plans on the calendar, I just have such a hard time with having my time scheduled out in advance, but these days I am just happy to put anything on the calendar to give little things to make time go by faster.
We had our official anatomy scan on Monday. I was nervous just because I obviously didn't want to discover anything that might make the next 18-20 weeks full of worry. Luckily everything went really well and he looks great! Despite the fact that *I* am not growing like most pregnant women, Chase is growing strong and healthy just the way he should and measuring right on time for what my estimated due date is. (though my guess is still that he will be 8 days "late" and arrive Dec. 26th) We were also able to confirm that he does not have cleft lip, at all. Not that cleft would be the end of he world, in fact in the broad spectrum of birth defects that's such a minor thing, but since I was born cleft, it is something our babies are at a much higher risk of having than most babies. But should we ever face that, we will deal with it. I may be bias, but I think he has the most adorable nose in the world. It is crazy to me how much bigger he looks now. My last ultrasound was seven weeks ago, and he still looked like he had all kinds of extra space in there. This time, he was all curled up, and had his little legs crossed at the ankles. He's a little person now! I mean, he always was but.... it's just crazy.

How far along? 22 weeks!

How big is baby? Approx 11" long, and 1lb

Total weight gain/loss: -18. (140) I don't know what the heck is going on with my weight. I was positive I'd gained again in the last two weeks. My belly has grown... a lot, I'm eating a ton, I haven't been that sick. I'm not sure why (or HOW) I lost 2lbs again.

Maternity clothes? My jeans fit, but aren't very comfortable if I'm sitting for a long period of time. They work for a trip to the grocery store or something like that though. My yoga pants are still fine though, I either wear them below my belly or just don't fold the waistband down and wear it over my belly- both are comfortable and still look fine.

Sleep: I have been lucky in that this pregnancy insomnia I keep hearing about has stayed away so far. I'm waking up several times to use the restroom, but still falling right back asleep.

Best moment the last two weeks: It's been a fairly uneventful two weeks, other than our anatomy scan we had on Monday. Everything looks great and baby is developing perfectly. Despite MY weight loss, he's growing just the way he should be. I think our bodies are amazing.

Movement: Tons. It's like a never-ending dance party.

Food cravings: Not really craving anything, though I've really been enjoying open-faced cucumber and tomato sandwiches on an english muffin lately. And I can't believe I'm admitting this, but I've actually grown to *like* my herbal pregnancy tea. I don't love the taste, but my body craves it, and I probably drink 48 oz of it a day, at least.

Food Aversions: Anything leafy, still. I'm usually such a salad eater but not now. I've made chunky veggie mixes in place of my usual spinach salad though, just chopping cucumber, tomato, avocado, etc. and eating that instead.

Gender: Boy. <3

Pregnancy Symptoms: I had several days of serious nausea last week. Unfortunately I was sick for my entire Jackson Hole vacation. I think I'm better now, at least... I feel better the last couple days. I still feel very anti-social and I worry people mistake that for depression. I'm not depressed, I'm quite happy with life right now, I just like to be left alone. I'm not sure why.

What I am looking forward to: Third trimester!

Upcoming appointments/events: Our next appointment is Aug. 20. I don't think Jon is going to make it to that one (work will let him but I feel like we've asked SO MUCH out of his job lately with our trip to the lake and then all these appointments, since it's not a "big one" I think I might just go it alone this time.

Milestones: So far: made it through first trimester, had first (and second) ultrasound, and discovered gender, and felt movement, Jon has felt movement from outside, belly popped finally, anatomy scan (went well), being able to see movement

20 Weeks. Half Baked!!

The last two weeks have been the absolute best of this entire pregnancy by a lot. Let me tell you the ways!
First of all.... those eight solid weeks of constant puking and losing 21 lbs seems to be over. I can eat food again. I seriously began to wonder if I was ever going to be able to eat food, or not feel lethargic again. Alas, the light at the end of the tunnel has arrived, and it's wonderful. I get sick SOMETIMES but it's not at all the constant battle it was. I had two "bad days" this week, which means I had FIVE glorious good days. Amazing.
Second of all.... this little man is active as all get out, and every time I feel him move and wiggle, I am so amazed at the whole process. Fascinated by it, really. 40 weeks is not THAT long. (well, OK, so it feels like a lifetime but in the big picture it's not) The fact a whole person can be made in 40 weeks just boggles my mind. Anyway, not only am *I* feeling Chase wiggle and move on a very regular basis, but it's not bold enough movement Jon (and my mom) have been able to feel it too. It's fun to share that with the people I love, it makes it all that much more real.
Third of all... we spent a week at Lake Powell. Lake Powell is pretty much my happy place. Whoever said Disneyland is the happiest place on earth has never spent an afternoon floating in peace, cut away from society and soaking in the scenery and sunshine. I won't go on about that, as I will do a whole Lake Powell post here soon but... it's JUST what I needed. Seriously.
Fourth... we are completely back on track to planning and hoping for the home birth we have wanted. We both feel SO at peace with this decision we made over two years ago. Every little ounce of anxiety I had regarding the prenatal care I was getting at the OB office is gone. It feels fantastic to be back on track. :-)

How far along? 20 weeks! Finally!

How big is baby? According to the tracker, he's about the size of a banana.

Total weight gain/loss: -16. (142) I finally started gaining... I actually gained 3lbs this week while at the lake. I'm amazed at how much my body has changed the last two weeks- but especially the last week. I obviously don't want to keep the pace of 3lbs a week the rest of the pregnancy (oh my goodness... can you imagine?!) but I am happy to see the scales going in the right direction at this point.

Maternity clothes? Not quite. I haven't tried my jeans on since I got home... but yoga pants are still comfy. A lot of my clothes have quite a bit of give anyway, or can be worn lower off my tummy, so even though I do suddenly have a belly, I haven't had to graduate to maternity clothes yet.

Sleep: Still sleeping better than usual and on a more "normal" schedule. I'm loving it!

Best moment the last two weeks: Movement finally being strong enough for Jon to feel it from the outside. I'm so glad I can finally share that part of this experience with him.

Movement: The last week and a half I'm feeling movement very regularly when I lay still. It's the most incredible feeling.

Food cravings: Not really having cravings other than cucumbers, which I swear I could live off of. I'm happy to be home and have access to real, fresh foods again. Now that I have a blender again I'm getting back into the smoothie routine.

Food Aversions: Anything leafy. It's a texture thing, rather than taste. I plan to attempt cooked cabbage tonight though, wish me luck! Also, plain water went down great at the Lake. In that heat an ice cold drink of water is incredible... but now that I'm home, it's back to tummy-churning.

Gender: Boy. <3

Pregnancy Symptoms: I'm very happy to say that I'm feeling SO. MUCH. BETTER. Nausea still hits me a couple times a day, and I'm still throwing up a few times a week, but that's nothing compared to before. I have gotten quite a bit of my energy back and don't feel so drained all the time thanks to the fact I'm actually getting calories in now.
I do feel a little off emotionally still. Not bad, not depressed just... really anti-social. I don't want to really talk to anyone or be around anyone and it has nothing to do with them, at all. I just enjoy the quiet of being alone or with Jon. I do want Jon around pretty much 150% of the time, which obviously can't happen.
Other than that, I feel pretty good!

Belly Button in or out? In

What I miss: Nothing. I don't miss anything about pre-pregnancy anymore. I'm so excited about this next chapter, I'm living in the now, and looking forward.

What I am looking forward to: Hmm, I can't believe how many of the milestones I've already hit. It's exciting to think about being in the third trimester, the home stretch! That's quite a ways off though.

Upcoming appointments/events: We have a birth forum on Aug 13 to go hear from other people who have used the midwife we picked, and my next appointment is Aug 20. I hope to schedule a full anatomy scan before then since the one at my OB's office fell through due to them being complete idiots. We'll see, though. I'm feeling really at peace with everything right now and not too anxious. Besides, the last thing I really want is some false positive to stress over the next 20 weeks. Whatever is going to happen is going to happen. All I can do is make healthy choices for my body and my baby and go with it.

Milestones: So far: made it through first trimester, had first (and second) ultrasound, and discovered gender, and felt movement, Jon has felt movement from outside, belly popped finally

Why I Care (But Still Don't Want Your Opinion)

Since my last post, pretty much telling everyone to can it on telling me how opposed they are to our plans, I've had a few conversations that really have made me think. I went back and re read everything I said, and took some feedback into consideration and I feel the need to clarify just a few things. Don't mistake this for an apology. It's not. I don't regret anything I've said, nor do I take a word of it back. I am sorry if I've offended anyone, but I still stand by my words.
I know that when I put information out there, people will bite. Of course, that's human nature. I have an opinion on everything under the sun.... and if I don't, I sure can come up with one real quick. So why had this been bothering me so much? I make a lot of unconventional decisions that a lot of people don't agree with, and rarely does it actually bother me. I tend to be fairly headstrong and confident in my decisions.
I tend to assume when people are defensive that they are insecure in their position... perhaps questioning the validity of their own thoughts and actions, having doubts, or are otherwise unsure of the points they are defending. I had to look within myself. Was that the case? Was I having doubts about the safety of home birth? Was I really sure of my body's abilities? Was I absolutely positive this is the best path for our family right now? Or was I just trying to tell myself I was? Why did I feel so defensive and so easily offended over the issue? I tend to say what I mean, mean what I say, and make decisions after carefully researching and drawing the most educated conclusion I can with the information available to me. Because of that, when people disagree I usually don't give a darn. Why did I now? Why when people around me make comments that make it clear they think this is dangerous or reckless did I take it so deeply personally?
I really had to ask myself these things, to understand my own out-of-character emotions about the issue.I mean, some of the well-intended things people have said, genuinely trying to help and give guidance have resonated so bitterly with me... and I don't like feeling that way.
Then I realized it, while writing in my journal. WHY this is bothering me. It's not what people are saying. It's not that not everyone agrees. (really, no one but Jon and I need to be on the same page anyway) It's WHO. It's the women whom I look up to in this roll that I am preparing mentally, physically, and emotionally to embark on. This journey to motherhood where I aspire to be like the wonderful women around me. Aunts, cousins, sisters, grandmothers, MY mother... these are the women I watch, in awe of how amazing they are.
I don't tell them enough. I don't tell them at all, really... but ALL of them embody the kind of mother I hope to be in one way or another. My grandmother is the most selfless, giving, POSITIVE person I've ever met in my entire life. The entire world could be in shambles around her and she'd still be able to give you 100 reasons why life is wonderful. My mother is the hardest working, most resilient person I've ever met. She would do anything for her family, and never at any point in my entire life have I been left questioning that. I'm amazed at how she can pull out of anything it seems. My sisters (all three of them) are incredible mothers, who somehow manage their jobs, husbands, kids, and everything else. Shelly is pretty much a gourmet chef (seriously, I'm over here serving grilled cheese and she manages a full dinner AND dessert, WITH a toddler and a baby?! Please, no one let Jon know this is possible!) and Tanya has more patience and love than any single human being on the planet. She even loves OTHER people's kids. Like.... neighbor kids. I pretend I don't hear mine when they run up asking if we have puppies to play with. They probably think I'm deaf. Or just really mean. Or both. I look at the family and kind of kids my Aunt (and Uncle!) raised and I just think wow... they seriously did a thing or two right, all while staying true to their Faith and managing to be phenomenal examples to everyone around them. Truly inspiring.
You get the point. These are women I look up to, WAY more than ANY of them will ever know. They embody what I hope to be. For a long time I didn't even plan to have kids because I'm so terrified I will just screw everything up and be a terrible mother. I fear I will never be able to live up the the examples I've been blessed to have.
So when I feel so strongly pulled in one direction (home birth) with so much passion and certainty, and am met with so much fear, doubt, and opposition from the very people whose examples and opinions on all things motherhood I treasure the most, it leaves me feeling so conflicted. Do I go with what my heart tells me is right for me, or with what was right for those I aspire to be like?
That's what this week has been all about for me. After a lot of thought, and a lot of prayer, I got my answer today. I had an appointment with the midwife we've decided to go with. I felt really good about her before I ever went to my OB. After talking with several local, and reading through all their websites, I just felt so drawn to this one but I hadn't actually MET her. We did today. All week, and again before my appointment I have searched within myself, and prayed to my Heavenly Father that I might know what track I need to be on, that I might be able to set aside my own selfish wants, and sort through the opinions of others, and know what is truly and unbiasly (we're going to pretend for a moment that unbiasly is a word) right for us. Willing to accept any answer that brought peace, I've sought these answers. As Jon and I left our appointment, I felt so overwhelmingly at peace with this decision. I mean, a feeling of complete ease for the first time this entire pregnancy that everything is going to be OK, that we are where we need to be, doing what we need to do, and in good hands. I have no doubts. Jon doesn't either.
I won't be offering up that we are planning a home birth in conversation because really... the only people that need to be on board (Jon and I) are, and I respect where everyone is coming from. I generally try to avoid pregnancy/ baby conversation unless I'm asked anyway, because talking about myself just feels weird, and I know no one cares to hear about it all the time.
So, while  quite frankly you can still take your opposition and shove it... it's not because I think I know better than you, it's because I DO care what you think, just not enough for it to change my very much so made up mind.

Why I DON'T want your opinion. Like, at all.

I'm a reasonably healthy 23 year old woman, on no medications with no diseases. I am a healthy body weight with a BMI of 23.1. For the last year, we have eaten a very healthy diet, mostly whole organic foods, I don't drink alcohol and I don't smoke. It takes a whole lot to get me to take pain killers or any medication for anything and I take care of my body. I'm 18 weeks, 1 day pregnant.
Jon and I have talked about having a baby since we got married pretty much. February 2010 was when we officially started trying. It was a long road, but looking back, I wouldn't change it. We used those three years. We grew closer together, we became more stable in every way, and just as importantly: we learned. The night we decided to start TTC, I posted a status on Facebook. It was a VERY true statement. "I think childbirth might be the most terrifying thing in the world." If you had asked me my ideal birth experience then, I'd have said "Knock me out, do a c section, and wake me when it's over!" The mere idea... the whole concept of childbirth to me was traumatizing. What I didn't know, is I had a doula on my friends list (I had never even heard the word doula) who had to swoop in and comment. I don't even remember WHAT she said, but it got me thinking.
More importantly: it got me reading. It got me LEARNING.
I found myself so incredibly intrigued by everything. People had babies at home?! Who in their right minds would do THAT?! People actually WANT to do it naturally?! WHY would anyone want to feel the pain when you don't HAVE to?  I had to learn more, I had to know why people would possibly make these crazy decisions that to me made absolutely no sense.
The more I learned, I mean REALLY learned...the less crazy they seemed. In fact, it made a whole lot of sense. What seemed crazy was taking a perfectly healthy pregnancy into a hospital and subjecting what should be a perfectly normal birth to a cascade of risky interventions.
What didn't make sense was spending 9 months avoiding medications, toxins, unhealthy foods, etc. for fear of how they may effect our unborn babies, but come labor, throwing that out the window for seriously heavy drugs like pitocin and epidurals and not even questioning the lengthy list of risks and side effects and complications that come along with them because after all, they're mainstream, common, routine even.
What I couldn't wrap my head around is trusting our bodies to go through this process of pregnancy, to grow our babies strong and healthy, and then throwing that out the window come labor and giving up all trust in the divine design of our bodies as women, and placing more trust in doctors than God, and more trust in medicine and drugs than our own bodies.
What seemed totally nuts is buying into the idea that this perfectly normal process needed any intervention from man in the first place.
Birth in our country is so screwed up. We subject ourselves to interventions that are so routine we don't even question them anymore. Women are given pitocin, and given a box they must fit into. "you must make X amount of progress in X amount of time or else [insert intervention here.]" and the chain reaction begins. Intervention A leads to intervention B which leads to fetal distress (or failure to progress... or a whole list of other "emergencies") which more often than not leads to an "emergency" C-section. Then we sing the praises of the OB a medical staff for saving the day and we're SO glad they were there....when really, all they did was fix a problem created by the medical intervention in the first place.
I don't buy it. The God *I* believe in did not send us here, command us to multiply and replenish and NOT give us the ability to do so. The c-section rate in this country is roughly 33-35%. I refuse to believe that over 1/3 of women are unable to birth their babies without intervention. I refuse to believe that our bodies aren't able to do what our creator himself DESIGNED us to do. I refuse to trust medicine and doctors more than I do my very purpose on this earth.
I trust birth. I trust that my body know how to do this. I trust that when left alone, birth is natural, beautiful, and safe. I DO care about more than just the end result. Getting Chase here safely is of course my top priority but damnit, I matter too. I care about my experience, and because of that I choose to use a care provider that believes in the beauty and safety of birth, that cares about my experience, and that believes not only in my ability to birth my baby, but agrees with my desire to experience it and is willing to work with me towards that goal.
I am SO SICK of hearing that this isn't the right pregnancy for a home birth, or that midwives are "for people who just slip the baby right out and I should focus on getting the baby here safely."(seriously. and I didn't even mention home birth. Just the "M" word when asked what OB I was using)  I assure you, ALL OF YOU, that I am making every single decision with ONE thing in mind: what's best for my baby, for myself, and for our family. I appreciate the concern and the GOOD place that it comes from. Jon and I (and Chase!) are so beyond blessed to have so many people in our lives that care about us, we truly don't take that for granted. I love and respect you all, regardless of your choices. But I am done listening to it. I already allowed myself to be scared into a care provider I have not been comfortable with up until this point, and I'm angry at myself for it. After the bleeding scare (Which is completely fine now, and not a concern for any reason. In fact the bleeding WAS the result of a problem (placenta previa) correcting itself! Amazing! My body knew just what to do with that misplaced placenta, imagine that!) I was feeling so much judgement from everyone around me that obviously things weren't right, and I should use an OB for the safety of baby Chase. And when my iron got low, I was feeling it again... things aren't gong perfect, better stick to that OB.
But you know what my gut tells me? What my brain tells me? These things are common in pregnancy. And guess what? No more bleeding, and just a week on iron supplements I feel a huge difference! Yes, I look tired because I AM tired. There's a lot going on right now! And yes, I have some things in my personal medical history that means I need to pay special attention to a good supplement regimen and nutritious foods, but guess what else? I'm doing that, and I'm feeling good! These are hiccups, not complications. I'm healthy! Chase is healthy! I'm so tired of being made feel like I need to be afraid of this process. All I can do is the best I know how, and trust that the rest will work itself out.

So you know what? THANK YOU to the snarky, judgmental, rude idiot on the phone at Valley OBGYN today, for reminding me EXACTLY why I didn't want OB care to begin with, and giving me the push I very much needed to stand up for what I know is right for my little family, and firing my OB and getting back to a care provider that suits my needs.

I'm not judging women who choose OB care, or to deliver in a hospital, or make ANY choices differently than me. I can see how it would come across that way, as I have some strong opinions. But, these opinions don't apply to you! I only know what is right for me, and what makes sense for me. I'm so glad that I live in a place that I DO have the choices I have. I'm glad women who feel more confident and comfortable in a hospital have that choice and are able to do so! If that's where they feel safest, that's exactly where they should be. If someone feels a birthing center is what they need or want, that's wonderful for them, I'm glad they're becoming more available for women.
As for me, Jon, and our baby? We choose home birth. Please respect our decision. I won't mention it in conversation if you don't.... but really, don't feel obligated to tell me how much you disagree with it. As much as I love and respect you, I really don't want your opinion. Like, at all.

18 Weeks

The last two weeks have been a little bit rough. I've struggled with keeping food down, and actually ended up fainting at the grocery store, thank goodness Jon was there. The last week has been so much better than the one before, I'm able to keep food down more regularly, I upped my supplements, added Iron B complex, and folate, and have been making sure to get more salt in. I'm feeling *SO* much better. Since I'm not so nauseous all the time I'm also able to get a lot more whole, nutritious foods down (and staying down!) and I can tell a huge difference in how I feel. Staying hydrated has been much easier with the vomiting subsiding as well. I'm not saying things are perfect, I still get sick almost every day, but in comparison to what it was last week and the few before that, I'm feeling pretty darn good!
But one thing is for sure. Jon and I have put a TON of thought into our choices for prenatal care and labor/ delivery for this pregnancy. I know there are plenty who disagree with our choices, and that's FINE. I respect that. However, we still feel that even despite the bleeding scare we had at 13 weeks (bleeding completely stopped 100% 2.5 weeks ago, by the way) and my struggles with nausea making food a struggle for a while there... we ARE planning on continuing to plan a home birth, with a midwife.
I've gotten several comments on this from friends and family alike. I KNOW these are well-intended comments, I KNOW it's because everyone cares, and I am SO SO SO SO glad that Chase has so many people that love him and care about him already, what a lucky boy! But please understand that these ARE educated choices on our part. We ARE NOT just taking shots in the dark here and hoping for the best. For many, many reasons we still feel this is the best option, and have every intention of pursuing it. I respect the choices others have made for their own pregnancies and deliveries, and all I'm asking for is the same consideration. Please trust Jon and I as educated adults to make our own decisions.
I hope no one takes this personal. It's not directed at anyone in particular, I promise.

How far along? 18 weeks exactly

How big is baby? According to the babycenter tracker, he's about the size of a bell pepper this week.

Total weight gain/loss: -19. (139) I'm not losing nearly as rapidly as I was now. I had dipped down to -21, but actually in the last three days have GAINED almost 2 lbs, which is a really good thing!

Maternity clothes? Nope. I have one pair of 4's that don't have stretch to them, and they are mildly uncomfortable, but my other jeans have a bit of stretch and don't really feel any different.

Sleep: I've been having some lower back discomfort (going to the chiropractor!) that's had me tossing and tuning to get comfortable, BUT... still getting more sleep than usual, and though I do wake up to readjust a lot, I'm always able to fall back asleep. I'm super enjoying it and hope it lasts!

Best moment the last two weeks: Feeling the first little flutters of movement. Unreal <3

Movement: I'm not feeling regular movement, but I also have a low and front-lying placenta, so that may be a factor. I have felt movement for absolute certain a handful of times, and a handful more that I am not quite sure if it was him, or just tummy rumbles.

Food cravings: Not really having cravings, but food in general is going down easier most of the time. I'm kind of on a yogurt kick... and string cheese. Probably because they're reasonably healthy and super easy to grab, not really craving them.

Food Aversions: Anything leafy. It's a texture thing, rather than taste.

Gender: Boy. <3

Pregnancy Symptoms: I feel a little "off" emotionally. Not really mood-swingy, and not depressed... just off. I don't have a whole lot to say and I feel really anti social for no reason. Just know that even though I'm a little distant, I AM OK! I promise. I'm finding that I really like to be alone, and left to my thoughts, I've been writing a ton. I know I'm clingy to Jon right now, and pretty much want him (but ONLY him) around every second it's possible... but I don't find other company as appealing. I LOVE my family SO much, I LOVE that we're close, I LOVE spending time with them, and I don't know why I'm so quiet and distant lately.
Other than that, I'm happy to say nausea is getting MUCH better. Mornings and nights are a little queasy and occasionally during the day, but food is going down (and staying down) so much better the last few days. It's GREAT.
I'm tired. But that's pretty normal. :-)

Belly Button in or out? In

What I miss: I miss having energy, and I miss being able to go out to dinner with my husband and not worry about getting sick at the restaurant. But it will be so worth it, and all those things will come back in time. What matters now, and what my focus is NOW, is baby Chase, and growing him strong and healthy.

What I am looking forward to: I can't wait for my belly to really "pop".... the bump is finally starting, though in clothes I don't think anyone can really tell yet, I can't wait for it to really be obvious. I figure if I'm going to be sick all the time I want the novelty belly to show for it!

Upcoming appointments/events: My next appointment is on the 23rd, for the full anatomy scan. I am very confident that we will be able to continue planning a home birth at that point. I feel (and Jon agrees) that it is the right choice for our family. For all three of us.

Milestones: So far: made it through first trimester, had first (and second) ultrasound, and discovered gender, and felt movement

Pregnancy Confessions

I have a confession. Well, a few confessions.
Confession #1: I've been a little bit of a pregnancy/ birth junkie for about 3.5 years. Like... borderline obsessed, minus the borderline part. I swear most waking moments (when I didn't have litters of puppies on the ground....) were consumed with reading and learning about all these decisions Jon and I would make for our babies should we ever be lucky enough to have them. In my reading, and many conversations with Jon of which I'm not entirely sure which actually interested him and how much he just went along with to humor me, I learned a whole lot and I'm thankful for that knowledge. I may be a bit weird now. I regularly pull out all (insert embarrassingly high number here) cloth diapers I've acquired and look at them, folding and organizing. Gosh darn it my newborn stash is adorable. I also think placentas are fascinating and totally cool. (I WILL be encapsulating, by the way. Yeah. You can go google that now and be absolutely horrified. I think it's awesome.)
Confession #2: For being fairly educated on these matters, I actually don't know a dang thing. I honest to goodness thought that being a pretty health conscious person with a pretty healthy diet, I would sail smoothly through pregnancy. I was convinced that people generally brought the sickness and nausea on themselves by not taking care of their bodies and paying attention to nutrition and, surely, this process that is what the mere survival of our species depends on can't be THAT hard on an otherwise healthy woman. No, it must be in their heads and in their choices. If only they'd make healthier choices they wouldn't be so miserable. Oh how very ignorant I was.
Confession #3: As much as I was absolutely and completely convinced that I just HAD to be one of those women that loves being pregnant and would never, ever have a single negative thing to say about this magical process, I'm not. During my 3+ years of infertility I admit it would really irk me when I'd hear women complain about their miserable symptoms. I still think it's a little insensitive around those struggling with fertility issues, BUT, I've come to realize that my conception problems didn't make them any less miserable... I didn't understand how anyone could NOT enjoy being pregnant. Then I got pregnant. On one hand, it's wonderful and I do wake up every single day and immediately think of how many weeks and days along I am, counting down the weeks to my guess date, and read all about baby Chase's development. I've never been happier about anything than to be expecting, I want this more than anything in the world. BUT. This pregnancy has not been easy, and it has not been fun.
A part of me has felt too guilty to just be straight up honest. I mean, I wanted this, we tried for this, we prayed for this for SO long, how dare I speak negatively of it now that our dreams are coming true?!

16 weeks.

How far along? 16 weeks exactly

How big is baby? Well, according to BabyCenter: "Right now, he's about the size of an avocado: 4 1/2 inches long (head to rump) and 3 1/2 ounces. "

Total weight gain/loss: -18. (140) Though the weight loss has slowed down the last 5 days, and I haven't lost anything so I'm really hoping that I've turned a corner on that. Even though things don't always stay down, I'm finding my appetite is returning and that's really exciting.

Maternity clothes? All my normal clothes still fit just fine. I don't think I will be needing maternity clothes any time soon.

Sleep: Still enjoying the fact I'm sleeping pretty decent most nights. Also maintaining the most normal sleep schedule I've had in a really long time which is nice. I try not to eat myself up too bad that I'm still requiring nearly 10 hours of sleep a day to feel rested, but the urge to nap in the evening seems to slowly be wearing off.

Best moment the last two weeks: Three words: IT'S A BOY.

Movement: I THINK I maybe felt movement once, I'm not really sure though and it's still a little early. Nothing regularly at all.

Food cravings:  I am really liking fruit right now. Cherries especially, and plums. Also raw peas and of course cucumbers still. I'm back to eating eggs which is nice, they're good energy. Eggs and raw milk are absolute staples. Occasionally I get a bit of a sweet tooth, which isn't normally like me, and I have a little scoop of ice cream at night.

Food Aversions: Still fairly repulsed by anything leafy. It's more a texture thing than anything. (OK, mostly it's the way it clings all over in my mouth coming back up. YUCK)

Gender: Boy. We're having a boy.

Pregnancy Symptoms: Still just nausea, which also seems to be aggravated by motion sickness. I avoid going anywhere in the car at all costs right now. Also, my boobs hurt. Kind of... a lot. I'm boycotting bras, officially.... I don't really care if the world is offended that I am female, and therefore have breasts fully equipped with nipples. Get. Over. It. Bras hurt!

Belly Button in or out? In

What I miss:Hmm, I miss being able to go out without getting super nervous I'll get sick in public. I honestly don't even care when I get sick at home, it's part of the deal... but throwing up in public is super embarrassing to me.

What I am looking forward to: Hopefully nausea subsiding, and getting a belly.

Upcoming appointments/events: I will go back to my OB on the 23rd, and hopefully be cleared to resume planning a home birth. I'm super hopeful.

Milestones: So far: made it through first trimester, had first (and second) ultrasound, and discovered gender.

Bump Picture: Coming soon.

14 weeks: Hello Second Trimester!

Other than one big scare, things with this pregnancy are moving along fairly textbook. I'm THRILLED to officially be in the second trimester, and looking forward to the third. I think I'll do this twice a month this trimester since more things will be happening, and then weekly the third, but we'll see.

How far along? 14 weeks exactly

How big is baby? According to the babycenter tracker, about the size of a lemon! We've come a long way from the poppyseed days. Actually, when I really stop and think about how rapid and complex fetal development is, my brain kind of wants to explode. It's incredible!

Total weight gain/loss: -16. (142) Nausea is still a daily battle, but liquids are staying down much better and I'm keeping hydrated with more ease, so that's good.

Maternity clothes? No change in clothing fit yet, still in my normal jeans comfortably.

Sleep: I'm requiring a lot more sleep than I ever have. Likely because I struggle to get adequate calories and the baby obviously takes what they need, I'm left exhausted. I'm sleeping about 10 hours a day/night. Usually 7-8 hours at night, and a nap a few hours after I wake up in the morning. I sometimes feel sleepy in the early evening but do not allow myself to nap then, partly because it feels excessive, and partly because I want to continue sleeping well at night.

Best moment the last two weeks: Undoubtedly seeing our baby for the first time.... nothing I've experienced in my life even comes close to that level of extreme joy.

Movement: Still too early. I can't wait though.

Food cravings: Still not really having an appetite for much. Watermelon, cucumber, and cottage cheese are staples but wouldn't call them cravings, more like my go-tos. Though last night I absolutely NEEDED a cheeseburger, smothered in BBQ sauce and crispy onion strings. Jon picked one up at Chili's... granted I only ate about 1/4 of it and was stuffed, it hit the spot like no other and was DELICIOUS.

Food Aversions: The only thing that honestly repulses me is salad. I used to eat it every day, but it's so gross coming back up and that's happened so many times... I can't even look at it without gagging. Even just throwing a handful of spinach in the blender with a smoothie grosses me out. I do it.... but anything leafy is just... yuck.

Gender: Obviously too early, but I have my suspicions.

Pregnancy Symptoms: Just nausea. I'm tired, but it's a side effect from lack of calories because of the dang nausea.

Belly Button in or out? In

What I miss: I'm so damn happy to be pregnant, honestly... yeah, it would be nice to go out to dinner at a restaurant and not have to map out the quickest route to the bathroom, but it's whatever. It will pass eventually, and be so worth it.

What I am looking forward to: feeling movement, and discovering gender.

Upcoming appointments/events: Well, I am REALLY hoping to transfer to a midwife, but as for right now, I'm labeled high risk until this placenta tear is healed, so until further notice I am under the care of an OB. I will go back on July 23rd for the anatomy scan, and to check the placenta. If that's healed and I'm in the clear, I will go to a midwife after that. We MAY do a 3D Ultrasound July 5 for gender. Oh it's so tempting....

Milestones:Saw the baby for the first time, completed first trimester!

Bump Picture: Not much of a bump picture, but there it is...

The Scariest Scare

I must start with a few warnings. One, this story is graphic. To respect that some of you may want to know the gist of what happened without all the gory details, I'm going to put all the "gross" or graphic things in italics. If you don't wish to read those things, skim over them for just the basics. Two, for anyone who has experienced pregnancy loss, this may be a trigger story, though everything worked out in the end. Third, this was the best AND worst day of my entire life. Without a doubt.

Monday morning, I woke up feeling all sweaty. My shorts clung to my legs uncomfortably, and I tried to ignore it and doze back off to sleep, not really wanting to start the day yet. (Why are beds so much more comfortable in the morning than they are at night?!) I reached down to pull the material away from my skin, and was a little surprised just how "sweaty" I was. My hand.... was covered in blood. Confused, I threw the covers off, and looked down, and was horrified to find my entire side of the bed saturated in blood. My clothes, my body, my bed... the amount of blood was unreal. I literally pinched my arm wondering if I was having a nightmare... surely this kind of scene didn't happen in real life! I got up and ran to the bathroom, at this point still not entire sure where it even came from because I felt completely fine!
I peeled off the bloody clothes, and my heart completely dropped when I realized where it was all coming from. Inside me.
I sat on the toilet, still bleeding heavily. With every gush of blood, I felt all the happiness and excitement of this pregnancy leave with it. I felt something quite large pass, and heard it plop in the toilet. I have read several times over that any time you're pregnant and pass any kind of solid or clot matter to collect it to bring into the OB with you. I tried to see what it was, but by this time the toilet water was dark red with blood, so I had to fish it out. It was a deep red mass, about the size of a medium russet potato, and the exact texture and density of liver. I dropped it in the sink, and just stared at my blood covered hands. Listening to the blood, still pouring, my entire body was overwhelmed with sadness as I sobbed. I turned to wash my hands in the sink and call Jon. Between how crazy the bleeding was, and the size of the clot thing...
I had no doubt, I was losing our baby. It was over. Everything I had ever read the last three and a half years, the bleeding, the passing of a solid mass so big, it was nearly textbook miscarriage, minus cramps. I had no cramps at all, but I also felt SO empty and disconnected from my physical body I began to question if I was cramping and just not feeling the physical pain. I called Jon at work. It was about 8:45am at this point. I never call him at work, he didn't answer, but immediately text me "Everything ok?" Of course he had NO way of knowing what was going on. An hour earlier when he left for work I was fine. But, for some reason sitting, looking at those words... it seemed like the most ridiculous question anyone had ever asked me in my entire life. I couldn't text back, I called and he answered right away. I told him I was bleeding bad, that I was losing the baby, and needed him to come home right this minute. I told him about the bed, and that the bleeding wouldn't stop. He said he'd be here in 10 and hung up. What I didn't know, is he hadn't actually understood anything I had said, all he knew was he had to come home. So he was completely unprepared for the scene he was about to walk in on...
Sitting there, I felt so empty. A couple more clots passed, smaller than dime sized, and I have never felt more alone than in those moments. It was like nothing else would ever matter again. At a loss, I text my mom, and she called right away. I didn't know if I needed to talk, or what I even needed to say, I think I was just grasping at straws trying not to feel so alone and numb. I told her what happened, and asked who I should call, where I should go. I was super light headed by this point and was afraid to stand up by myself because I was so dizzy. I couldn't think of the name of the OB I saw year before last, or even the name of the clinic to google a phone number, so she called my sister to get it and Jon got home.
He walked in the bathroom, and had to take in the scene. The amount of blood everywhere was overwhelming... and he hadn't even seen the bed yet. Not realizing he hadn't heard what I told him on the phone, I could tell he was overwhelmed by what he saw. I couldn't find words. I just sobbed, and kept telling him I was sorry. He is just as excited about this baby as I am and though I now I'm obviously more "involved" at this stage in the game, being the one carrying the baby and all, it is HIS child too, just as much as mine. This was his loss too, not just mine. He held me as I sobbed.
At some point, I went into "deal-with-it" mode. There were things that had to be done, there were sheets and clothes that needed to get in the washer, there was a call to the OB to make. Unfortunately, I was so dizzy and light headed, I was useless for all of it. I told Jon he needed to strip the bed. He seemed a little confused, since he didn't know about the disastrous mess in the bedroom, he was, again, shocked to find yet more blood.
He threw everything in the washer, and helped me get upstairs. I wanted to be able to lay back a little, and ended up laying in the bathtub, trying to drink some Gatorade, because I was super dehydrated and water just hasn't gone down well this pregnancy at all. At all. Jon also called the doctor. They could get me in in about two hours. For those two hours, I cried, I searched the internet for ANY kind of hope, ANY kind of story of bleeding this heavy, and passing masses, and things turning out OK. I just wanted some kind of hope to cling onto, some kind of chance that what I knew wasn't the case. By the time it was time to go, I had still come up empty handed. Feeling defeated, Jon helped me get dressed, and we were off.
After we got checked in, I was looking around at the other patients: another couple very obviously excited to be there... a woman with the most perfectly round belly literally sitting there, smiling, a mom with a toddler who kept rubbing her belly, excited for their babies. And then me and Jon, sitting in silence, hands clasped, trying to wipe the tears away as quickly as they escaped my eyes. It seemed like we waited forever, but I know it was only about ten minutes. They took my weight, blood pressure, asked about some dates, what symptoms I'd been having, and about the bleeding. The look on the nurse's face was telling, she thought it was every bit as hopeless as I did. Her eyes were full of pity as she told me she was so sorry, and that this was the hardest part of doing what she does.
She took us into a room with a ultrasound machine and a huge TV on the wall. I turned to Jon... I did not want to see our baby without a heartbeat. I didn't want to see what was lost. The thought made me sick. I was already so attached, so in love, I couldn't bare the thought of having that image in my head.
The OB came in. I was still crying, I gave him the very cliff notes version of what happened, and he said he wanted to take a look and just see what exactly we are dealing with before making any final decisions.
He put the gel on my tummy, I turned my head, closed my eyes, tears streaming down my face. It wasn't fair. I had imagined this moment a million times- when we see our baby for the first time. It wasn't supposed to be like this. I felt hopeless.
"You're going to have to open your eyes eventually so why don't you take a look at your strong, wiggly baby."
...WHAT?
I looked at the screen, in COMPLETE shock. There was our baby, wiggling and dancing across the screen. Two arms, two legs, we could even count five toes on one foot, saw a strong, healthy heartbeat. There was no denying that baby was VERY much alive and well. It was the most incredible feeling I've ever experienced. I didn't know THAT kind of unconditional love really existed. I didn't know I could feel even more attached to this baby than I already had.

I kept saying "but there was so much blood... and that clot thing... how is this possible? How could it be? What matters is the baby is fine. I'm fine. I'm still pregnant.
What the OB determined, is I have a very low placenta that likely WAS covering my cervix, which is pretty common in early pregnancy. It can cause spotting, which I've had... but some of that slow bleeding can be collecting, creating a clot that can be big or small. That's likely how that potato sized mass was formed. A placenta that covers the cervix USUALLY moves into place as pregnancy progresses, and either the placenta itself moving or some kind of movement I did can make that clot come dislodged. The only time it's a true risk is if part of the clot is behind the placenta, and detaches it with it, or if it stimulates contractions. Luckily this isn't (really) the case with mine.  Mine appears to have been just barely behind the edge of the placenta, and did pull just a tiny bit away with it. However, it's minor enough that with "taking it incredibly easy" for the next 4 weeks, he is confident it will heal up and the baby will be just fine. I'm taking his orders seriously: no going to work, ABSOLUTELY no lifting, nothing strenuous, lots of rest, LOTS of fluids, and stress management.

The whole experience made me realize that my priorities have been out of whack again. All of these things I've been stressing lately: I need to be at Ruff House more, my house needs to sell, we need to move, we need to make more money, we need to blah blah blah. NONE of it freaking matters. None of it. Ruff House is dong great, I hope my house sells, but you know what... until it does at least I have a dang home! And money is hardly important. What matters is family. Not necessarily just blood family... but family. That's what matters, and I'm so thankful for mine.
I'm thankful for my family, and that when I'm lower than low, I have an INCREDIBLE support system behind me. That, I have someone to call when I feel alone... lots of someones! I'm thankful for my husband, who was my ROCK through the whole thing even though he was hurting, too. He cleaned up the gross bloody mess. He called the doctor when I couldn't speak. He held my hand through the whole day.... through the tears and hopelessness, and then through those magical moments of seeing our baby for the first time. I'm thankful God is trusting us with the miracle of another life, that he's allowing this baby to be a part of our family.
I'm thankful for medicine and technology that allowed us to see that everything is going to be OK. I believe pregnancy and birth are generally not risky and are USUALLY best left alone and not treated like a medical emergency. We do still hope to have a homebirth with a midwife, as long as my appointment next month shows that everything is healed and normal... but I'm thankful that that technology exists, that the OPTION of birthing in a hospital is there.
 I'm just thankful.

12 Weeks

I'm twelve weeks along today. I guess you could say it's yet another milestone in my mind.... I mean, another month passed. Sometimes I wish I hadn't have found out SO early, because time is just barely inching by I swear.
This month has been a little hectic, but as far as the pregnancy is concerned, it's been fairly uneventful. I am having doubts on my initial choice of prenatal care provider, and this week have contacted a different midwife I really want to meet, so hopefully that will happen this week or next week at least. I know, without a shadow of a doubt that I want to stick with a midwife, and press forward with planning a home birth, that's for sure.
I'm still enjoying my alone time during the day. I write in my journal a TON. ~50 pages a week or so. I'm super excited to move in three weeks and pray that it goes smoothly.

How far along? 12 weeks exactly

How big is baby? about the size of a lime, which means I had to examine the limes at the store. We've come a long way from the poppyseed days!

Total weight gain/loss: -11 so far. I'm struggling with my appetite and nausea still, but I try not to get too hung up on numbers and just make the healthiest choices I know how to.

Maternity clothes? Hah... no. Not even close. My size 4 jeans seemed a little bit snug last night, but I think it was just evening bloat because they fit normal this morning.

Sleep: Still sleeping better than I usually do. In fact, I have a pretty normal sleep schedule for the first time in YEARS. I'm going to bed by 1am, and up by 9am, and not even waking up through the night. It's amazing.

Best moment this month: Definitely hearing the heartbeat for the first (and second. and third. and forth) time. Everything is just so real after that.

Movement: Still too early. I can't wait though.

Food cravings: Not so much having cravings. I'm struggling with even having an appetite. Fruit and pure fruit smoothies seem to be my safest bet, plus help with hydration so I have been eating a lot of them. Probably makes my diet higher in sugar than it really SHOULD be but at this point in the game, I'm not gaining weight, having a hard time keeping things down, and really there are worse choices I could make, so no guilt here.

Food Aversions: Salad. Usually I eat one every day but I can't find a leafy green that I can stomach right now. I'm hiding spinach in my smoothies to try to get leafy greens in, but I know I should be getting more. Really, I'm so tired of throwing salad up that the mere thought of eating anything "leafy" makes me gag. Other than that, nothing in particular irks me, but almost everything comes back up. I'm having a REALLY hard time with water, slightly better when I put a little shot of pure pomegranate juice in it, but trying to just eat foods with a lot of moisture (cucumber, watermelon, etc.) to help with hydration, which I know I'm having a hard time with.

Gender: Obviously too early, but I have my suspicions.

Pregnancy Symptoms: Nausea. A lot of it. Every day

Belly Button in or out? In

What I miss: I miss.... being able to eat without having to consider how miserable it will be coming back up.

What I am looking forward to: getting out of the first trimester, hopefully start "showing" soon, feeling movement, finding out judgement, gosh.... everything.

Upcoming appointments/events: I no longer have an appt. scheduled for the 10th and am considering switching care providers.

Milestones: completed three months! Also heard a healthy heartbeat.

Bump Picture: I really can't wait to start showing, but if I'm being honest with myself, it's not happening yet. Sometimes, particularly in the evenings, I feel like my clothes are a bit more snug, but I know it's just bloat and not baby yet.

Eight Weeks

Well, I passed another milestone today. Ok, so I'm not sure in what world (other than my own) 8 weeks is a milestone, but it pretty much marks the end of another month so in my book, it counts as a milestone. I'm going with it. It's also the exact one month mark from the day we got our first positive home pregnancy test. Which... for the record is undoubtedly in the running for being the best day of my life up until this point.
It's been a somewhat uneventful month looking back. I have written in my journal a ton. I just bought a new one and I'm pretty sure it won't last two months. If that. I just have been doing so much soul searching and thinking and looking at the world completely differently. I feel like the last 6 months have been hugely progressive in self-discovery and I am really embracing it. I feel like for the first time in a long time... I make no apologies on who I am, what I believe, and what I stand for. It's liberating. I feel like my priorities are clear, and I understand what is truly important to me, and where everything falls on that list.
I've had pretty awful morning sickness. I'm not sure why they even call it that when clearly it lasts all day long. Until about 1-5pm just depending on the day, I have ZERO interest in food. And by zero interest, I mean if I so much as see or smell any food item, I'm running for the nearest puke container. Except, I don't usually actually get sick, usually I just FEEL like I'm going to have have nausea to the point of not being able to focus on or do anything else. Then, it subsides, and for a few hours I want to eat (just about) EVERYTHING. Then right before bed I feel a little queasy. Not terribly bad. I just take it as my que to go to bed, and problem solved. It is so worth it though. I try not to complain because this will pass, and is such a small price to pay. It's the strangest thing because on one hand, I'm kneeling in the bathroom determining if it's coming up or not, feeling like absolute dirt, and on the other, I can't help but smile because it's just so real that this is really finally happening. I keep to myself a lot during the day, partly because I really don't want to complain, and partly because I really am enjoying the quiet alone time in which to reflect on everything that is going on. I'm usually HIGHLY dependent on human interaction, and never want to be alone if there's an alternate option, but I'm finding comfort and peace in the quiet these days. I am SO glad that I'm able to take this time and embrace all that's going on without my schedule obligated to anyone or anything else right now. I'm so thankful for that. I love Ruff House, I do. (well, most of the time.) But this is a time that I am most thankful for my wonderful manager who makes it possible for me to step away and focus on things most important to my heart right now. Life is wonderful.

I copied this questionnaire from the internet, and figured it might be fun to do once a month or so, just for kicks. I mean, not that much is really happening yet, but soon!

How far along? 8 weeks exactly

How big is baby? According to the tracker I downloaded, about the size of a kidney bean.

Total weight gain/loss: -6 so far, but last week I dropped 4 of that during what's been the worst of my nausea. This week hasn't been quite as intense as last, so I'm hopeful.

Maternity clothes? Lol. Not even close. I can't wait to get to that point, but I've got a LONG way to go.

Sleep: YES! Oh I'm actually sleeping better than I have in a long, long time. I'm feeling a bit tired once afternoon hits, but I'm finding that come bedtime when the lights go out, I actually FALL ASLEEP in a reasonable amount of time, and am waking up at much more reasonable hours without an alarm. I am absolutely loving it.

Best moment this week: Hmm, well. Not pregnancy related, but Jon got a job offer at a hospital in Murray so that's neat.

Movement: Not for about 12 more weeks, and I can't wait.

Food cravings: Not really having any intense food cravings at this point. The last couple days I've been on a bit of a PB&J kick, but that's fairly normal even not pregnant... where I just really enjoy them for several days in a row and then don't even think about them for months, so I don't know if that's even pregnancy related. Today Olive Garden sounded really really good, but I don't know that that was a true craving either.
I am enjoying cucumbers on a daily basis... but again, not pregnancy-exclusive because they're one of my absolute favorite foods to begin with so....

Food Aversions: eggs. I haven't tried boiled eggs yet and want to, because I like them.... but over easy eggs that I usually eat on a daily basis and can't get enough of... nope. They smell like urine while cooking and I can't handle it.
And I don't know if it counts as a food aversion  but I had to switch to a lemon toothpaste, because I was gagging on the minty stuff.

Gender: Obviously way too early, but I have my suspicions.

Pregnancy Symptoms: Nausea regularly, other than that I just feel tired but not miserably so, just enough to really enjoy rest when I can, and be ready for bed at night. I'm not napping during the day. I also do feel a little weepy sometimes, but not terribly.

Belly Button in or out? In

What I miss: Hmm. Well. Energy I guess. The last year we made huge healthy changes that have stuck, so I didn't have any dangerous/ unhealthy habits to give up in the first place.

What I am looking forward to: SO MUCH! To find out what we're having, to finally get out of the first trimester, to start showing, EVERYTHING!

Upcoming appointments/events: First real appointment with my midwife is June 10th, at 12w 5d.

Milestones: completed two months! I'm 1/5 of the way done! that's 20%. woot!

Bump Picture: Um, no bump, but here's the pic. I'm bloated tonight, but that's certainly the only change. Apparently a single kidney bean doesn't change much from the outside.

1 + 1 = 3

Well, we weren't going to go completely public with this news for a while, because it's still REALLY early.... but I honestly couldn't keep my mouth shut with my family, and Jon couldn't with his.... and one by one it slipped to a few friends, and then Jon had a big fat slip of the tongue at work today so everyone there knows.... so, what the heck, here goes.... WE'RE PREGNANT!
Again, REALLY flippin' early.... early enough that we honestly have no business even telling anyone yet. I'm bad at secrets, though. Apparently Jon is, too.
I've known for about 10 days now, tests confirmed it on Monday. (ahem... like... 17 tests because I kept NOT believing them....)
We couldn't possibly be any happier. Well, maybe we could but then we'd surely explode into a billion little pieces.
Thirty eight months of trying.... now it's happening.
So there you have it, there's our secret. There's the source of my unusually chipper posts lately. We aren't due until Dec. 18 (I TOLD you it was so early....) so lots of time. We both feel pretty overwhelmingly positive that this is our time. It's hard to explain, we just KNOW everything will be OK.
